Recap of yesterday's meeting! 3/20/11 edition!

Man, that was a great way to end the quarter! We had exciting finishes to Cromartie High School, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th M.S. Team, and FLCL!

We also got to do a test run of Anime Debate Tournament, a new event to be held at this year's MegaCon! We had four teams of three debate over topics such as "Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan is a manly anime" "Anime needs more black people" and "Vic Mignogna is still a contender to headline conventions and anime."

It was great discussion overall, and we got to refine the rules of the event before it goes live at 5PM this Friday in W224D of the Orange County Convention Center. Sign-ups will be held at our table in front of W224B from 1PM to 4:30PM. You should check out the details and rules of the event here.

We also determined what anime we shall show in April, May, and June. For series, we shall have Record of Lodoss War, Gunbuster vs Diebuster, and Durarara!! For features the club selected Castle of Cagliostro, Legend of Koizumi, One Piece: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island, Arcadia of my Youth, Armitage III, and Interstella 5555!

With these, the upcoming showing of REDLINE at the Florida Film Festival in April, and our Anime Nites @ The Geek Easy, it's going to be a great spring! Our first meeting of the next quarter will begin on Sunday, April 3rd!

By the way, if you are going to MegaCon this weekend and have a smart phone with access to twitter, please follow us @PropellerAnime so you can get full updates on our events at the convention!

Recap of today's meeting, 2/20/11 edition!

IT'S PAC BAYBEE! GET YOUR SCOOPS! I think a certain fighting game that stars superheroes and Mike Haggar somehow prevented people from coming to the meeting. That and people having to make movies.

Unfortunately, we were not able to show 5 Centimeters Per Second today due to an audio problem and instead showed an additional two episodes of Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage, perhaps one of the most popular anime series we have ever shown in club.

It looks like gangster stories are of interest in club since we compared today's episodes to the beginning of Gungrave. That was generally liked and then they brought in zombie-like creatures and other weird stuff...

Anyways, here is the news you need to know!

  • Summer Wars came out this past week. If you like good anime movies, check it out! Mamoru Hosoda(The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) directed it along with studio Madhouse!
  • On March 3rd at 8PM, we'll be doing an event called Anime Nite @ The Geek Easy. It will be at A Comic Shop! Please come out for some fun!
  • The next club meeting has been moved to Saturday, March 5th as to not compete with Pokemon Black & White's release.
  • We'll be getting together for bowling at the Aloma Bowl on Sunday, March 13th! Details to come.
  • We hyped the hell out our MegaCon events this past week. Make plans to go!
In Cromartie High School, we learned that the best way to handle trolls is to deck them in broad daylight in a crowded area. There will totally be no consequences to that. Also, Kamiyama won the Japan Boss Tournament for his knowledge of dairy products. We also learned survival in the wilderness from Freddie as he scaled mountains and crossed rivers to get to the nearest 24/7 ramen shop!

Things have started to get real serious in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th M.S. Team. Shiro and Aina have reunited in in battle and had to team up with each other in order to survive the harsh climate. This results in Shiro confessing his love for Aina and then getting naked in a conveniently nearby hot spring with her. Good for him!

Then he recieved a court martial because of his time with Aina and had to sneak away from confinement with his subordinates to rescue the guerrilla village Kiki lived at. They weren't actually under attack by Zeon, they were just there. However, one launched bazooka missile kills a Zeon soldier and all hell breaks loose!

Kiki's father, who is not Sagat, gets killed in battle. Then Shiro sheds manly tears and takes a deadly shot at his enemy. The village reels from the tragedy and next we will see what consequences Shiro and his team will face for going out into battle

A new mission started in Black Lagoon: Second Barrage. Rock has been hired by Hotel Moscow to serve as a translator for a deal they are making with a yakuza family. Revy tags along as his bodyguard, ensuring that lots of people will be violently shot to death on what should be a simple mission.

During their downtime, Rock meets a nice girl who turns out to be heir to a rival yakuza family Hotel Moscow plans to wipe out. When he finds out, he urges Revy to help him protect the girl. The girl's yakuza family has a swordsman who can cut straight bullets in half and him and Revy team up to wipe out many of the Hotel Moscow-aligned yakuza group at a bowling alley. It was so awesome.

We'll watch 5 Centimeters Per Second at the end of the quarter and we'll finish the final two episodes of Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage at the next meeting and start FLCL! It will be action-packed!

Recap of the last meeting! 2/5/11 edition!

Last meeting was very sweet! Literally! We had brownies, candy, cupcakes, and caramel-filled cake. And punch too! Gotta have punch. We had a couple big things to celebrate!

For those who still don't know, we beat Anime Spot in dodgeball 3 games to 1 this past Saturday, thus making us the supreme anime club in Orlando! We did some casuals after and it started to rain. We also had a couple games to show off from the Global Game Jam that some of our club members worked on. They made some pretty rad stuff in 48 hours!

We'll have what video we have of the games up in the future, but right now you can download the games worked on by Steven C, Erik B, Dustin J, Jordan J, Kassandra L, and Michael D. (With the master plan.)

Good job guys! If anyone else has collaborative projects to show off, whether they are games, artwork, short films, or AMVs, let me know so I can schedule them in for meetings!

We also talked a bit about MegaCon, taking place March 25th - 27th in Orlando, Florida at the Orange County Convention Center. I showed you guys a scary convention video filled with dumbasses but don't worry, MegaCon will still be rad. We have a ton of awesome events there too so please come out and support us! And tell your friends!

In the future, we'll highlight our major events at MegaCon and some of the other things in the Anime Events Track you should also check out!

Awesome stuff was seen and we are halfway through all of our series! In Cromartie High, we got to see the glory that is the MechzawaCycle and Takenouchi ended up in America when he conspired with luchadore criminals to hijack an airplane!

Aina of Zeon and Shira of the Earth Federation have reunited in fierce battle in Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th M.S. Team! Will their love blossom? (Also, a manly headbutt was delivered in a Zeon prison cell. Hell yeah!)

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage was pretty crazy! Revy, Eda, and the rest of Lagoon Company fought of many bounty hunters including a gothic lolita chainsaw freak, a rotund pyromaniac, the blade-wielding Shenhua("lovingly" called "Chinglish" by Revy), and a so-called wizard who likes grand entrances! And don't forget the cowboy from Florida! Yeah, those were a couple of awesome episodes.

Last but not least, we showed Robot Carnival. Oh man, what a treat that was. Nine animated robot-themed shorts from people that were already masters of Japanese animation or were on the path to becoming so.

It featured directors such as Katsuhiro Otomo(AKIRA), Hiroyuki Kitakubo(Golden Boy), Hiroyuki Kitazume(Zeta Gundam), and Hidetoshi Omori(Bubblegum Crisis), just to name a few. Everyone needs to watch this. Not every short will win you over, but the ones that do will blow you away.

That's it for now! We'll meet again on February 20th! See you then!

Recap of the last meeting! 1/9/11 edition!

The new year has started off on a fabulous note! The Propeller Anime Club has much to look forward to as we become the driving force of anime fandom in Orlando! And then... the galaxy! (Okay, probably not!)

NEWS
  • This website has been upgraded! But you already know that!

  • Thursday, January 20th, we go see GANTZ! Get your ticket early!
  • Orlando Anime Day is on Saturday, January 22nd! Field trip time!
  • Mamoru Hosoda is the director of Summer Wars and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and you best not forget that!
  • We have a future partnership with an awesome venue waiting in the wings! We will publicly announce it soon! It will be good for the club and even better for the local anime community!
Recaps

Mobile Suit Gundam: The 8th M.S. Team - Shiro Amada becomes the commander of an Earth Federation ground unit of mobile suits that are trying to fight Zeon forces in the jungles of southeast asia. While traveling through space, he meets a lovely Zeon pilot named Aina Saharin and the two will be fated to meet again as he has her precious watch. During this, we see that Shiro is pretty good at going off on his own and kicking some ass!

Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage - The Lagoon Group is back but a pair of murdering kids that may or may not be vampires rampage Hotel Moscow, causing the crime lords of Roanapur to get together and organize a heated coalition. It doesn't work well and the creepy vampire kids kill some more people and make out and do other naughty things. Now there is a big bounty on their heads and Revy and Eda from the Church of Violence(my favorite kind of church) band together to take the kids out!

Cromartie High School - Good natured Kamiyama goes to the delinquent-filled Cromartie High School and ends up becoming the leader of his tough and rugged class. Then he tries to form pacts with the other tough students of his school, with Freddie Mercury, a gorilla, and a robot(that every else thinks is a real person) chief among them. And then they all hum. I did not properly describe the ridiculous of this show but it is awesome!

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - This movie that is totally directed by Mamoru Hosoda and created by Madhouse is incredibly fantastic and highly emotional. It shows what happens when a simple girl can go back through time to try to fix the little things in her life to make it better. But even the smallest changes come with a high price. We see things like jealousy develop amongst friends, would-be romances that will now never happen, and even public humiliation. Auntie Which said it best, one person's happiness is someone else's misery.

Anyways, that was our first meeting! Lots of fun was had! Make sure you check our schedule regularly!

Recap of today's meeting! 12/5/10 edition!

Let's try a simpler recap! This meeting was fun, though there were a couple hiccups! Here are the notes!
  • It turns out classes are being schedule on Sundays at Full Sail this month. This will make finding room space even more difficult!
    • We had to move to a different room for this reason.
  • This also means that we never got to see Sword of the Stranger or handle the contests we have been discussing.
    • Sword of the Stranger and the contests will be on our final meeting of December 12th.
    • That debate event I want to try will be pushed back to January.
  • Meeting room and time for the final meeting to be determined. If it comes down to it, my place will be used!
  • Golden Boy and Jojo's Bizarre Adventure are finished! Both ended in a very awesome way!
    • Golden Boy was VERY educational! Students learned the importance of networking in the final episode, among other things!
  • In Bastard!!, Dark Schneider became for broken than Shin Akuma and Omega Rugal put together and beat Ninja Master Gara.
  • Enzian Theater is trying to get Summer Wars but it won't be shown this month or in January. Hopefully in February!
  • Orlando Anime Day will happen again on January 22nd. It's a small dealers' room and a video room but they might have some cool stuff to buy! It's on 3 bucks to get in!
  • We'll be Ice Skating with Anime Spot at Light Up UCF on Saturday. If you are able to make it out, meet at Full Sail in front of Building 3B at 5:30pm and we can carpool from there!
Okay, one more meeting this year. It will be on December 12th, either at Full Sail or my place! Stay tuned!

 RECAPS

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Jotaro and Iggy teamed up to take out Geb, the blind stand user who can track by sound and kill with water! It was very intense!
  • Then they challenged Darby the Gambler, whose stand takes souls of those he beats in games of chance.
  • After taking Polnaref and Joseph's souls, Darby challenges the mighty Jotaro who deals the MANLIEST bluff, puts everything on the line(including his mother's soul), and owns Darby!
  • Where'd Jotaro get DAT JUICE!?
  • They see DIO next time and things start to get FABULOUS!
Golden Boy
  • Kintaro wrecked a shady dude with some Kenpo he spent a week learning. Might have to do with the corkscrew kiss he gave Kintaro...
  • Series is episodic, however, Golden Boy taught us to never swim close to the sun!
  • We finish Golden Boy next time!
Bastard!!
  • POWERFUL wizard Dark Scheider was sealed into the body of a little boy and can only be unsealed and sealed again with the kiss of a virgin girl.
  • Dark Schneider owns the first of the Four Lords of Havok and then gets naked and takes on fire elemental Efreet and shows him what for as well.
  • Dark Scheider's love interest, Yoko, was kidnapped by a ninja master named Gara who does not carry around sand or listen to Linkin Park. Instead, he uses slime to dissolve her clothes. It's for the lulz.
Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise
  • Our feature is definitely more beautiful than ever on BluRay and possibly the greatest contribution to anime Gainax has ever made!
  • Club dug the movie. Great discussions on the attempted rape scene(did it belong in the movie or was it there to illustrate the weakness humans give in to?) and the featuring the escape from the assasssin disguised as a hobo!
  • That spider toy Manna had was awesome too!
  • Anime World Order goes into great detail on the movie and the former scene we disussed and their thought on it. It's pretty interesting commentary.
Overall, we saw a well-animated piece that featured incredible world building, along with strong commentary on politics, religion, and economic crisis provided as a backdrop to an unexpected hero who goes from a slacker to a man determined to launch into both space and history books.

 Recap

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

Forget the Joestar family, Jean Pierre Polnareff is the main character now! After he shed MANLY TEARS, he and Kakyoin escape certain death. Later, they find J. Geil and Polnareff enforces the second part of True Man Law #10! Then he hit on this hot chick Enya, who is one of Dio's highest servants and has TWO right hands as well. She is obviously J. Geil's mom and wants revenge. She has a stand called Justice, that can control people it puts holes through... like Hole Horse! Get it!?

Tokyo Magitude 8.0

So last time, Yuuki had to go to the hospital and Mirai had a dream that he died. This time, we find out that wasn't a dream and Mirai was talking to a brotherly figment of her imagination. Once she makes it back home, she can't block out his death forever. IT'S TOO BAD THAT STEVEN G. HAD TO LOL FOR REAL WHEN THAT PART HAPPENED. GOD DAMMIT!

We finish the series next time!

Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

Our feature starred Professor Layton and that audacious brat Luke as they solve puzzles to gain immortality. It was charming and beautifully animated and what was up with that one dude's chest hair!? Anyways, that was a cool movie. Someone liked it better than Wicked City too!

  • Then they go ON A BOAT! And the boat is a stand! And the stand user is an orangatang! MADNESS!
  • The crew meets Jean Pierre Polnareff, a Frenchman who inspired Benimaru's character design in The King of Fighters and has a stand called Silver Chariot.
  • Polnareff joins the crew after Advol owns him hard. From now on, everything terrible in the series will happen to him because he's French.
  • They make it to India where everyone is poor and Polnareff leaves to find the killer of his sister. (He has two right hands due to family in-breeding!)
  • Avdol gets capped in the head by a classy stand user named Hol Horse. Polnareff cried manly tears. EVERYONE in this club should know what that means for next time!

  • A new Berserk anime project has been announced and it is 100% for real! What a manly news week!
RECAPS

Black Lagoon
  • In Black Lagoon, Rock and Revy have a crazy lovers quarrel of sorts. It gets very deep, and Rock almost gets shot in the head. He seriously manned up.
  • The Lagoon Company is transporting a kidnapped boy to a Colombian cartel. The boy is the son of a sorta wealthy South American family. The family has sent their maid, Roberta, to rescue him and kill lots of people. Yeah, she's that kind of maid!
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
  • In Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Mirai, Yuki, and Mari take shelter at Mirai's school, where they witness several people who have lost love ones during the disaster. There are more aftershocks but nothing serious.
  • The next day, Mari starts freaking out when news breaks out that her neighborhood is on fire. Fearful of her daughter's fate, she collapses. After she wakes up, the group goes back on their journey.
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
  • Jojo's Bizarre Adventure began! We are introduced to the Joestar bloodline, starting off with Jonathan Joestar being killed by the vampire head of Dio Brando early on. 100 years later, his great, great grandson Jotaro Kujo has decided to stay in jail because he is haunted by an evil spirit who violently beats up people while yelling out ORAORAORAORAORA!
  • Jotaro's grandfather and designated badass Joseph Joestar visits him and explains that the evil spirit is a Stand, a semi-physical spiritual manifestation of one's power. After Magician's Red stand user Avdol tricks Jotaro in leaving his cell, Joseph explains that they must kill Dio once and for all, as he has returned and taken Jonathan Joestar's body as his own!
  • In the next episode, Jotaro meets the first of Dio's assassins, Noriyaki Kakyoin. (He is supposed to be the bishonen in the manga but they is not reflected in the anime!)
  • After going Kenshiro on his ass, Jotaro and his group discover that Kakyoin was unwillingly under Dio's control. Once they save him, Kakyoin joins their group and they head on their bizarre adventure to Egypt to kill Dio, but not before Avdol names Jotaro's stand Star Platinum.
Evangelion 2.22
  • Our feature was Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance. Some cool robot vs monster fights happened and it looked very awesome! High quality animation for sure! They also introduced a new Eva pilot named Mari whose function is to sell toys and statues to creepy otaku in Akihabara so that the third and fourth Rebuild movies can be made.
  • In addition, Shinji and Rei secretly love each other! And Unit 01 has a halo over its head when it goes berserk!
  • Third Impact has also started! That wasn't in the television series!
Our next meeting will be on Sunday, October 10th! Our main feature will be Lupin III: The Last Job! Hope to see you there!

September 14, 2010

Recap of the last meeting! 9/12/10 edition!

Sorry for the lateness! Last meeting was fun! Many new members came again along with a few seniors that had just finished graduating from Full Sail!

I will be brief this time!

Samurai 7 has gone on to the graveyard, which means that we will no longer be showing it at meetings. Only one member wants to continue watching it which is not enough. The pacing is slow and sometimes nothing happens in an episode. It took ten episodes to get to a point where the series would start to mirror, in its own way, Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai.

I pulled up a list of short series that might work for future club meetings. Right now, it's safer to go with something that is thirteen episodes or less so it can finish by the end of the year. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure had the most interest so that will be shown at our next meeting.

We showed My Neighbor Totoro, a movie that is mostly about appreciating and coexisting with nature. It's lighthearted fun and many club memebers agreed that cat bus is awesome.

In Black Lagoon, lots of Neo Nazis got killed and things got really racist. Some very strong words were exchanged between characters. Most of all, we learned that Revy has more issues than A Comic Shop. She definitely needs a hug, but trying to do so is a suicide mission!

In Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, more horrors of the aftermath occur. Mirai, Yuki, and Mari try to escape to safe land by boat and almost get sunk by giant waves. Later on, relief begins to come in much like in any modern natural disaster. During these episodes, we see the true nature of human beings during crisis while they try to survive. Few are calm and kind while many show their rude, selfish sides.

It gets ugly a few times and even Mirai loses it as she lashes out at Yuki. Right now, they are separated from currently motherly figure Mari while they specualte whether or not their parents are alive.

That's it for this past meeting! Next time, I'll give a quick AWA report and we'll be watching Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance.

September 06, 2010

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 8/5/10 edition!

Yesterday was a lot of fun! We had more than half a dozen new faces that will hopefully return to future club meetings! I know at least a couple got to see their first Satoshi Kon film, which is always a good thing!

NEWS

Not much going on in convention land in town, but Anime Weekend Atlanta is less than two weeks away and EXPcon is in a month. Make plans accordingly if you want to go!

We talked of our fourth year anniversary plans and it looks like the weekend of October 23rd might be the time to celebrate! (The real anniversary is October 22nd, a Friday.) We'll figure that out soon enough. Ideas for the party consist of dressing up in costume, eating sweets, watching horror anime, and going to Rocky's Replay. Any other ideas would be appreciated! (Costumes are optional, by the way.)

We have about eight more meetings left in the year, which will hopefully be enough time to finish all of our current series and start fresh next year! We discussed what features will show in those meetings, and My Neighbor Totoro, Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance, Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise, Sword of the Stranger, Memories, Metropolis will be in there. If we can get Macross: Do You Remember Love? and Lupin III: The Last Job, that will round up our feature showings for the year!

Order of showings are still being worked out but Totoro and Eva 2.22 will be the next ones we will watch.

SHOWING RECAP

First off, High School of the Dead was not shown. There are several reasons as to why it was not shown. It may have not been a good idea to select it for showing in the first place. There's not anything said or done in the show that hasn't already been done hundreds of times and it's unknown whether a zombie survival show like this could stay interesting for more than a few episodes, let alone sixteen.

With that said, a club member gave me a really interesting suggestion after the end of the previous meeting. His concerns were that we have been lacking a series that has that drama and tension along the lines of something like Grave of Fireflies. He told me of a 2008 anime that was in the noitaminA block on Fuji TV.

The block is interesting because they don't show stereotypical anime with magical girls, giant robots, or shonen fighters. Rather, they focus on normal characters in imaginitive situations that are coming of age and much of the anime they air in that block tend to be dramas.

The anime he recommended was Tokyo Magnitude 8.0. In the first two episodes of the show, we are introduced to a young girl named Mirai who lives a very ordinary life as a middle school student and has a family she cannot relate to. It's a very typical family that can be seen in any modern country. She desires for her life to have more in it as she has friends who are of higher privilege. At first, it seems like another boring anime about kids in school, but the opening scene in the first episode paints a tale of disaster and tragedy that will soon come.

One day, she takes her younger brother Yuki to a robot exposition(part of which features robots whose jobs are to rescue victims trapped under rubble), and she steps outside while her brother uses the bathroom and after a series of events that leads her to feel very negative, she wishes the world would just end. Immediately after she says that, her wish gets granted as an earthquake of 8.0 magnitude destroys Tokyo.

During the initial aftermath, Mirai desperately tries to find her brother in the collapsed building the expo was held. There are fires and aftershocks with parts of the building continuing to collapse as she searches for him, all the while incredibly worried and fearful of the worst outcome happening. It's very touching and her feelings are expressed very sincerely. Eventually, Mirai and and Yuki are reunited, but it is still unknown if they have a home and if their parents and friends are still alive. Many people are dead and much of Tokyo is on fire. To pour more salt on the wounds, the threats of tidal waves are impending.

It sounds depressing, much like Grave of the Fireflies, however, hope remains and that may be the theme of the remaining nine episodes of the series.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was well received by the club and it will remain on the schedule. Before we showed that, we watched more Black Lagoon. In-between missions, we learn that Revy has always lived a dark life of killing and stealing, which gives a sharp contrast to this everyday salaryman life that Rock used to lead and that Revy finds disgusting. She asks at one point how people could live like that, which may be a commentary the author has on what traditional Japanese society has been for quite some time.

On their next mission, they are to go into the deep seem to salvage The Twelve Knights Led by Brunhilda, a painting from a sunken Nazi U-boat. The painting was supposed to represent and celebrate Adolf Hitler's coming as the victor in the war; however, that never happened and the submarine sank, never to rise again. A group of neo-Nazis find out about the mission the Lagoon company is on and plan to take them out. We will see what happens at the next meeting!

In Samurai 7, Shichiroji, an old commrade of Kambei's during The Great War, joins the party as they make their journey to Kirara's rice village. Kambei finally refers to Katsuhiro as one of the samurai in the party, totaling to six. All that is left is the silent Kyuzo who fought against Kambei earlier.

The group is currently in Metal City to rescue a girl or something. The Guardians that inhabit the city have a treaty and the the samurai can't intervene. However, Kikuchiyo tries to play hero and gets captured. The show is moving along and in a few episodes, it will get to the part in the story that is most relevant to the Akria Kurosawa film the series was based on.

Our feature was Millenium Actress, a fine movie directed by the late Satoshi Kon. It was not as upbeat as Tokyo Godfathers or Paprika, but a moving film nonetheless. Through the movies Chiyoko acted in during her younger days, we see the tragic and futile journey she embarks on to chase an old love that she will never see again. A lot of the scenes in the movie are surreal, almost like a dream. It's a trademark of Satoshi Kon's style and he will be missed.

To make up for my trip to Anime Weekend Atlanta, we will be meeting this upcoming Sunday! Time and location to be determined due to the Behind the Scenes Tour taking place at Full Sail University that day. See you all there!

Recap of Yesterday's Meeting! 8/22/10 edition!

Yesterday was fun! Between spending 45 minutes figuring out why logins wouldn't work only to discover that someone messed around with network cables along with a power outage halfway through club meeting, I think things went well! Right?

With the late start, I dropped the super awesome Fist of the North Star movie that featured Souther as a villain in an attempt to keep meetings under 4 hours. It will come back someday.

We finished Baccano! In the last three episodes, we get acquainted with Graham Spector, who is Ladd Russo's psychotic protege. He kidnaps Chane Laforet thinking her to be Eve Genoard and holds her for a ransom that Jacuzzi has to pay up. The rail tracer also shows up because he LOVES Chane and wants to marry her. It's very romantic!

The last three episodes are interesting as they were not part of the television airings. They got added in on the DVD release in Japan. The final episode of the original television airing has a more defined ending whereas these last three episodes leave things very open for the series. Baccano! is based on a light novel series that has even more stories to tell. A couple of other works written by Ryohgo Narita that you may want to check out include Vamp! and Durarara!!

We started on Black Lagoon which is totally awesome so far. Within two episodes, a timid Japanese salaryman is kidnapped by mercenaries and then becomes a hard-boiled badass. Revy, a foul-mouth woman who can use two pistols like she's in a John Woo movie pretty much makes this anime awesome.

The club caught up on Dragonball Z: Abridged. It took some of the blander moments of the Namek saga and made them fun. Lots of terrible homoerotic innuendo occurred in the two episodes we watched. The Ginyu Force is coming next!

Some more of Samurai 7 was shown after a hiatus. There's a new samurai that looks more steampunk than anything. His name of Hayashida Heihachi and he was a combat engineer during the Great War. (Deja vu cometh.) I don't think anything important happened in these episodes. What do you guys think?

Last but not least, we decided on our next anime(since Baccano! is finished) and discussed what we will do for the club's four year anniversary in October.

This time, I organized members who stuck around until the end of the meeting into teams of four in an attempt to get certain club members talking to each other about what kind of anime they like and determine what should be their group nomination. After 15 minutes of discussion, they would present their choices and I would pick the best sounding pitch.

The four groups selected Air Gear, Genshinken, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, and High School of the Dead as their choices. I must inform you all that I picked High School of the Dead. It happens to be the one I want to watch the least but is probably the most likely one that will be watched by the club members. However, if that is not the case, I will be double tapping this series to our giant anime graveyard.

I thought the experiment was interesting. I think it's good for the club members to get to know each other better and share the passion for the anime they love during the talks. But after this, it's time for a long break from a selection process as we need to eventually dive into the Fuji TV's noitaminA block of anime. From what I have gathered, it looks like the series of that late night block is not the typical anime that most be people would be familiar with. Sounds like another experiment!

As for the fourth year anniversary in October? Horror anime marathon and a costume party were discussed as ideas. We shall talk more in two weeks when we meet again!

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 6/21/10 edition!

We did it! After nearly two years, we watched an actual robot anime! All hail Shoji Kawamori!

News

  • We had two new members show up! They are both in Film at Full Sail and we hope they'll keep coming out to meetings and hangouts!
  • Speaking of hangouts, we are getting together with UCF's Anime Spot for bowling this Saturday at 1pm! It will be at Boardwalk Bowl on East Colonial Drive and Rouse Road. RSVP here.
  • Over summer break, we'll have a super robot anime potluck for those staying in town! Details later.
  • Don't forget about Kanpai, Anime! at Tatame's Lounge on June 29th!
Recap

  • In Baccano!, we discovered that the Rail Tracer was a conductor on the train that has ties to the Gandor family. In the time jump after the train incident, he offers them his assassination services. He's brutal dude; that is for sure!
  • Dallas and his thugs steal immortality elixir with their new found immortality only to get robbed by Isaac and Miria who mistake it for booze!
  • Ladd Russo shoots a kid in the head, but doesn't know he's immortal. You don't piss off Ladd Russo!
  • Ladd has an epic fight on the top of a train with the quiet girl in the black dress who is deadly with a knife!
  • In Gungrave, Grave avenges his old friends and takes out Balladbird Lee.
  • Bear Walken, who is also enhanced, brought a sword to a gun fight and dies pretty easily.
  • In Samurai 7, a new Samurai is recruited who can catch arrows very easily. His name is Katayama Gorobei and, like Kambei, he was also in the Great War.
  • Katsuhiro was trying to hold hands with Kirara~
  • Ukyo, lusting for Kirara even more, sends Blonde samurai Kyuzo to take out Kambei. Kambei prefers for him to join the other but he would rather fight instead. He beats him in battle but lets Kambei live. Kambei wants Kyuzo to join even more.
  • Fuzzy showed up because we had an anime about robots. We hadn't shown anything with that since 2008! Macross Plus had a lot of fun going on and had some beautiful animation!
The meeting went longer than planned. My apologies! However, everyone who watched Macross Plus is now a better anime fan! In addition to the badass mecha scenes, there was also a carefully played love triangle, an interesting take on futuristic concerts, and even a resolution between two old friends and longtime rivals.

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 6/6/10 edition!

News

  • A new anime night hosted by yours truly will be showing up at Tatame Lounge in Winter Park! It's called Kanpai, Anime! and it will take place on the last Tuesday of every month. The goal is to show an noteworthy anime film to an adult crowd while sake and tea is consumed. The first one will be on June 29th and the showing will be Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone!
  • Our friend David M. had to leave Florida to return to his home state. The circumstances are unfortunate and we wish him the best! Stay in touch, dude!
  • A new member came into club who is not a film student! Nothing against film students, but diversity in the club is a good thing!
  • Nothing new on the future hangout with Anime Spot. They did have a meeting after ours so hopefully, they figured out what the want to do with us. I did mention that I suggest Boardwalk Bowl as an idea to them.
  • Once Gungrave ends, members of the club want Black Lagoon to take it's place.
Mystery Feature

As you can tell from the top image, our mystery feature was indeed Studio Ghibli and Isao Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies, a World War II movie that shows the tragic and desperate struggle of two orphaned children as Japan fell to America. While sometimes light hearted, it is an overall depressing film that shows the harsh tragedies of war from the perspective of the losing side.

For that reason, Grave of the Fireflies is considered a taboo movie to show at anime clubs across the nation. Obviously I had to show it. The chances that some club members have never seen the movie and otherwise may not have been exposed to it made me feel obligated to do so. I also find this to be one of the most mature things that we could possibly show and I strongly feel that it would have been a good experience for some of the younger club members to watch this.

I wanted this showing to be a mystery because I didn't want to scare anyone off from attending the meeting. Nobody in club would intentionally go to feel sadness so it had to be a secret. This is a strong film and I am proud of everyone who watched it yesterday. For club regulars who were not there: imagine two hours where everyone was silent, not playing games, and focused intently on watching the film. It's a feat that sounds impossible, but that is the power this movie possesses.

This club doesn't have to be like other clubs that have plagued themselves with yaoi and moe fandom, or have regulated their showings to cheap thrill anime that offer instant gratification but are ultimately shallow. While we have shown those kind of works in the past(well, not the yaoi), it is definitely a positive that this club is sometimes able to watch anime that can be serious, thoughtful, and artistic.

With that being said, how did you all feel about watching this movie yesterday? Have you seen it before or was this your first time? I would like to know those things.

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 5/23/10 edition!

Yesterday evening was a club meeting of fun and interesting proportions! Our lineup changed a bit but things turned out well nonetheless.

News

Cyborg 009 was not brought in yesterday. Not only that, the second volume that one of our club members purchased with the first at MegaCon was empty when we open the case for the first time last meeting. So we've learned to open everything we buy at convention dealer room's immediately. Since many club members were vocal about seeing something else, we will. I took Cyborg 009 to the back and struck its pressure points and it's already dead.

Samurai 7, which won second place in the last democratic voting, will be shown in it's place starting next meeting. It sounds like an exciting series to watch!

When I met with the leaders of UCF's Anime Spot last week, we learned a lot about both of the clubs and planned a session for hanging out. We had decided on doing a picnic at UCF that will also involve kayaking and dodgeball. They are pitching it to their club as well but I am glad we are cool with it. If things work out, we can do a hang out on our turf later on.

This may not be club related but I am getting ready to begin talks on a monthly anime showing at a hip local establishment. This could be really cool!

Anime

We showed more of Baccano! and Gungrave. In Baccano!, the plot thickens with the rail tracer and we've discovered more about a secret order of immortals that use alchemy and can even create Homoculi. Looks like Full Metal Alchemist has influenced a lot of recent anime. They can suck people through their hand though! Isaac and Miria make friends with Ennis after she hit them both with their car last time.

In Gungrave, Grave(zombie Brandon Heat) is killing Orgmen and took down a super advanced necrolization of Bob Poundmax. Grave is wielding pistols and giant guns like he's Dante's from Devil May Cry, but without all the crotch shots. There's only seven episodes left and he's probably going to kill everyone else in Millenion. Just a hunch.

We showed that Sonic the Hedgehog OVA. It was an ancient ADV dub and the animation was supremely low budget. The plot was straight out of one of the Megaman games where they trust Dr. Wily for some reason even though it's obvious that he'll show his true colors after the heroes do all the work. This may have been worse than Sonic X.

I wanted to end the meeting with something cool since Cyborg 009 is no more, so we watched a Ranma 1/2 special that was part of the It's a Rumic World set that also includes specials for Inu Yasha and Urusei Yatsura.

The specials were created in 2008 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shonen Sunday and legendary manga-ka Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of the aforementioned works. Pretty much everything that made Ranma 1/2 a such a loveable show long ago was included in the special with all the nonsense cut out.

If any one is interested in seeing more Ranma 1/2, I recommend watching the first two seasons of the series and then STOPPING. Like any Rumic work, the series falls apart fast and the plots and jokes become very recycled. However, it cannot be denied that her works have helped create many new anime and manga fans every generation.

I hope everyone has fun for Memorial Day weekend! Have safe travels and get lots of rest! We'll meet again the first weekend of June and I will have a surprise feature to show! That's right! It will be a secret!

Recap of yesterday's meeting! 5/9/10 edition!

We had a super fun time yesterday as guns were blazing in everything we watched at the meeting!

NEWS
  • The head of Anime Spot, UCF's anime club, contacted me about the two clubs doing a hangout together in during their Summer term. Our club has a agreed and I have notified their leader! I'll get back to you on that!
  • Panels for AFO that have been approved are starting to be posted on their website, including the Rebirth of Evangelion panel that our guys do so well!
  • The Guin Saga has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks! Here's hoping for an awesome BluRay release!
  • We talked a little bit about Bang Zoom! Entertainment's president Eric Sherman declaring "anime is going to die" and that their studio would stop dubbing anime in 2011 if DVD and BluRay sales did not pick up.
    • Since then, he appeared on ANN's podcast and clarified what he meant. Basically, if sales don't improve, companies won't have money to pay for dub production and cease altogether.
    • He also said that Bandai Entertainment(one of BZ's customers) is depending heavily on the success of the future Haruhi Suzumiya releases and "one other title."
    • Bandai Entertainment responded saying that things are currently going fine, but if sales don't pick up then no more dubs.
Say what you will about dubs, you can't argue that they bring in new anime fans. Without dubs, the fandom can't grow. It's as simple as that. We'll see how Bandai Entertainment's future goes.

And now for what we watched!

  • In Baccano! we learn of Ladd Russo's backstory as he proceeds to violently smash someone's face in... with his fists.
    • In a flashback, Isaac and Miria meet Ennis as she hits them with a car. That makes 88 times that Isaac has put Miria in danger! That's still less than 100!
    • Creepy kid Czelaw plans to use Ladd for something and the Rail Tracer makes its first appearance at the end of our showing!
  • In Gungrave, we learn that Brandon Heat planned to be reanimated if something were to happen with Harry. Meanwhile, Big Daddy confronts Harry MacDowell and is killed.
    • 13 years later, everyone is obviously older and experimenting with other forms of body transformations. "Bloody" Harry finds out Maria is alive with a daughter and wants them both killed.
    • Maria dies but her daughter Mika survives to meet Brandon Heat(now known as "Beyond the Grave") and Dr. Tokioka. Next episodes should be action-packed.
  • We started Cyborg 009, which seems to suffer from a bad sound mix. The sound effect track is very low so explosions sound like thuds. Tsk tsk.
    • Had to remind people about the rules of our democratic choosing of this series. We shall continue it though.
  • We started and finished Gunsmith Cats! Like everything we showed at the meeting, there was a lot of shooting.
    • Someone remarked that Gunsmith Cats is what they would show people when they wondered what anime was. Good choice!
Next club meeting will be on Sunday, May 23rd! It will be in the evening since Full Sail's Open House will going on that day. A Sonic the Hedgehog OVA will be our feature showing. It's not Sonic X, in case you were wondering!

Recap of today's meeting! 3/27/10 edition!

Today was our first meeting after MegaCon which means we can finally shut up about it for a while. It's too bad we already started talking about Anime Festival Orlando, happening August 6th - 8th! A few people were new to the club today and we discovered that way more than half of the club are film students! Here's a rundown of what happened:
  • Talked about what we liked and did not like at MegaCon and shared stories and videos.
  • Discussed AFO. Panel submissions, artist alley, and of course Skies of Orlandia!
  • We celebrated Brent and Roger's birthdays! If you see either anytime soon, wish them a happy birthday!
  • Brandon Heat got all gussied up for Gungrave. Harry is trying to set up traitors while he himself is planning to pull a coup on Millenion.
  • Lots of shooting and explosions, featuring Bunji Kugashira! He's straight out of a John Woo 80s flick!
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp-USKnPDbY&feature=player_embedded LoL
  • Some people nobody liked died in The Guin Saga. Which should be called The Naris Saga because the 3 episodes we watched were all about him. Guin was probably in the whole thing for like 6 minutes max.
  • Guin did cut through a assassin, cutting a tree in half. It was so exciting!
  • Naris has been in drag quite a bit while Istovan has taken his own path to become a king. Is it me or did Rinda and Remus grow taller?
  • We caught up on Dragonball Z: Abridged. They made filler fun!
  • Lots of club members staying in town for spring break. This means barbeque and pool party next weekend! Details to come soon!
  • Zak proposed we show Baccano! in the near future. I am behind this. Brent proposed something but I cannot remember what it was!
  • Lastly, we showed Satoshi Kon's Paprika. People claimed to "get it." And or course everyone made fun of the fat dude, Tokita.
  • Did that big climax remind anyone else of Ultraman?
Next meeting will be on Saturday, April 10th for sure! Cencoroll will be shown as our feature. Since there will be no classes that day, getting a room at a reasonable time will be quite easy! Stay tuned for future announcements!

Recap of today's meeting! 1/24/10 edition!

HEY EVERYONE. IF YOU DIDN'T SHOW UP TO TODAY'S MEETING, THEN YOU HAVE MISSED OUT!

We showed Summer Wars, which was released in Japanese theaters last April. It was produced by Madhouse and directed by Mamoru Hosoda(The Girl Who Lept Through Time). I don't even know what happened while we watched it. However, it was FANTASTIC! This is the kind of new anime that Japan needs! Spread the word about Summer Wars because the people need to know that there is more to modern anime besides all the shonen and moe crap out.

Oh, we also watched There will be Brawl, Guin Saga, and some weeabo on American Idol. Her name is Mere Doyle and we had LULZ at her expense.

Recap of tonight's meeting! 1/10/10 edition!

Okay, I'll make this short and sweet!

  • The entire Read or Die OVA was watched and it was frikkin sweet! Such great action, art direction, mechanical designs, and soundtrack! We need more good anime like this in the world!
  • We watched episodes 7 & 8 of Gungrave. Brandon and Harry are moving on up in the world and it looks like some sinister plot will begin to unfold next time!
  • During episode 8, we all got distracted by the creation of our first club logo! oh YEAH!! Great job, Waldo!
  • We never got around to watching Guin Saga. The meeting was that action packed! We will next time for sure!
  • Jean "Rehab" Louis has returned after a mysterious 2 month disappearance! It was a joyous moment!
  • We experimented with democracy to determine what we will show at the next regular meeting and Shinesman won the popular vote!
